What is meditation?

 

The art of meditation is observation without judgement. Recognizing that you are not your thoughts, feelings, memories, or attachment to things.

 

Only our identity (ego) is kept alive by suchlike; this is what makes us human. However, we have the capacity to go beyond ego, and embody higher consciousness.

Higher consciousness is most commonly (and sometimes only) felt:

  • in orgasm

  • looking at nature

  • embracing a beloved

  • gazing into the eyes of a baby or a pet

 

It is a timeless dimension that exists within us, where the ego dissolves and we are "at one" with everything. It's life, before we interpret it using our mind.

Just as carbon can exist either as coal or diamond, we can exist either as ego or higher consciousness, unconscious people or an awakened generation. 

Why do you meditate?

I meditate to experience inner peace, manage stress, and regulate my ADHD. Meditation creates space for inspiration, insight, and internal guidance to arise. It has also helped with addiction, trauma, and focus.

How do you meditate? 

Noticing what arises in the mind without attaching to it. 

How does meditation work?

Where our attention goes, energy flows. Meditation works by innervating certain areas of brain with more blood flow, whilst downregulating neural pathways that are no longer used to the point of elimination. 

Neural pathways can be seen as rivers, the more a river is occupied by the flow of water (attention) the deeper the river becomes, and the more readily water flows there. However, if we divert the course of the water, new streams form that can in turn form ravines of their own. 

 

  • Reducing blood flow to the HPA axis, three areas of the brain which orchestrate our stress response (fight, flight, freeze).

  • Improving memory. Stress causes the hippocampus (our memory bank) to shrink. So a knock on effect from reduced HPA activity, is a bigger hippocampus. 

  • Strengthens the corpus collosum, a dense bundle of nerve fibers that connects the left and right brain hemispheres. This allows information to flow more rapidly, like ramping up a computers processing speed.
